Exercise And Longevity

29 July 2021

Longevity is every man’s goal in life. Everyone wants to live to the fullest, that is, we want to fulfill our goals in life and succeed ultimately financially and otherwise. We thought that having them would make us happy. On the contrary, there are more challenges and stressors in the environment that we have to surmount that some of us cannot sometimes overcome.

The pandemic is still lurking around us and threatening with more kinds of virus surfacing that is really scary and alarming. It has claimed thousands of lives all over the world that is making us more stressed every time we go out notwithstanding the face masks, face shields, and other health protocols that we have to follow.

Aside from this pandemic, we can hear from current events and news about natural calamities and disasters that are really unimaginable such heavy flooding in Europe and other parts of the world. Wildfires and drought also are wreaking havoc on the other side of the globe claiming lives, properties, and changing nature’s landscapes. Earthquakes also happen with powerful and very strong tremors that also have claimed lives and limbs.

All of these make us more scared and stressed which sometimes make our mind and body vulnerable to diseases like the coronavirus-19. So we have to do something to combat these stressors around us and find ways to hurdle such obstacles that may either make us sick in bed or make us a failure in life.

Having a long life is of course possible just like those in countries where people live more than 100 years old. Countries like Japan, Singapore, Hongkong and Switzerland boast having the oldest living individuals in the world. There are many reasons and factors that contribute to long life or longevity.

“Johns Hopkins-led study of 6,200 men and women over eight years found that those who adopted four smart behaviors reduced the chance of death from all causes within that time frame by an astounding 80 percent.(https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/). Following are those smart behaviors that we could apply in our life.

  • Stop smoking or don’t smoke at all. “Smoking affects coronary arteries and lungs, and smokers also have increased rates of cancer and risk of stroke.”
  • A healthy weight should be maintained - “The healthiest people in the study maintained a body mass index (BMI)—a ratio of height to weight that measures body mass—of less than 25.

To find out your BMI, try using a free BMI calculator. To reach (and maintain) a healthy BMI, get busy on lifestyle changes 3 and 4.”

  • Get up and move your body - “Aim for about 30 minutes of activity a day most days of the week. Try breaking it into three 10-minute bouts of activity per day—a 10-minute walk in the morning, another at lunch and a stroll after dinner.”
  • Choose healthy foods - “The study found that the healthiest people followed a Mediterranean-style diet. That means a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, tree nuts with healthy oils, fish (and less red meats), whole-grain carbs and olive oil for cooking.”

Engaging in physical activities for example, doing physical exercises as part of a healthy behavior has been also proved by other researchers as contributing to longer life expectancy or longevity.

"In addition to a healthy diet and psychosocial well-being, the benefits of regular exercise on mortality, and the prevention and control of chronic disease affecting both life expectancy and quality of life are well established.” ((https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0378512212003015).

“ Exercise can partially reverse the effects of the aging process on physiological functions and preserve functional reserve in the elderly. Numerous studies have shown that maintaining a minimum quantity and quality of exercise decreases the risk of death, prevents the development of certain cancers, lowers the risk of osteoporosis and increases longevity.” (retrieved from a similar source).

Another research on longevity affirms that physical exercise is one factor that boosts an individual's life expectancy or longevity. In other words, aside from the four ways to live longer as aforementioned, exercises have proved to be effective in making us live longer.

“Individuals engaging in regular exercise have a favourable cardiovascular risk profile for coronary artery disease and reduce their risk of myocardial infarction by 50%. (https://academic.oup.com/eurheartj/article/36/23/1445/2293352?login=true).

Exercise promotes longevity of life, reduces the risk of some malignancies, retards the onset of dementia, and is considered an antidepressant.” (retrieved from a similar source).

"Numerous studies consistently have shown that higher levels of physical activity are associated with decreased risks of coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, colon and, possibly, breast cancer, as well as osteoporosis."(https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF03340123

“If physical activity does reduce the risk of developing these chronic diseases, we also would expect physical activity to delay mortality and enhance longevity” (retrieved from similar source)
