How to Organize Thoughts and Ideas

22 June 2021

Every good thing comes from an idea. A lot of people have brilliant ideas and concepts but sometimes it doesn’t come to fruition because their thoughts aren’t organized. Sometimes people make do, but at times things would move along faster if the idea was organized in a way that it is easier to work on it.

Organizing thoughts and ideas are vital for a person’s efficiency not just at work but for everyday life. It is most important when you have a family and you’re juggling family life, work, studies, and personal life.

It would’ve been easier if thoughts and ideas could be moved and stored like physical things. But that can’t be done. It needs to be transformed from a thought to an idea to a realistic concept. A concept that can then be transformed into physical, doable activity or a thing that can be fully created and expressed through a medium.

There are also times when it is as difficult to have a lot of ideas compared to having no idea at all. With that said, here are a few tips to help you to organize your thoughts and ideas. Maybe it will help you get that brilliant business idea running, or that novel you’ve been wanting to write, or that YouTube channel that you would like to start. Hopefully, this would be able to help you concretize all of it:

1. Write it down. Sometimes we tend to trust our memory too much, however, in the age of the internet there are a lot of distractions that could take up our focus and memory space. We tend to forget what could possibly be a good idea. That’s why it’s good to jot everything down, whether in a notebook, planner, or even in your notes on your phone. It doesn’t matter if it’s chronological or comes in a certain organization. Just jot it down and think about it for later. What is important is not forgetting it.

2. Mind mapping. After writing all of your thoughts on paper or on your device, you would want to organize it. This is where mind mapping comes in. Mind mapping is a great way to visually organize information. Usually, when visual cues are used the brains process it rather easily as you can connect an image to your thoughts. This way, it won’t be much of a challenge to see it in a bigger picture and strategize what you want to do next.

First, there is a central theme that is the subject, problem, topic, or thought that you would like to expand on. The next thing you need to do is create straight lines to its associations or ideas relating to the central theme. You can put another layer or branch of association with a curved line after this. You can do this again and again until you have all your ideas in one place and it is easier for you to see it all as a whole.

3.Delete what’s unusable. Not all ideas are created the same. Some are more important than others. Some are more relevant to the end or objective we have in mind than the most. With that said, there are ideas that we would need to take off the list or visual map that we’ve created.

That way, it would be decluttered and the solution or end we would have is more simplistic and easier to deliver. However, some of them might be used for another project. Since it has been written or jotted down to your device you may be able to use it again in the future or some other things.

4.Take action. Create a list of step-by-step methods to concretize the idea you have in mind. If each step is daunting or too lofty to do in one go, create another list of smaller realistic and doable steps underneath it. That way, it won’t be much of a burden or too overwhelming to do for you. The important thing to remember here is to progress and eventually finish your project. Since you are in no competition or race with anyone but yourself, you can just focus on keeping the ball rolling.

5.Get rid of distractions. Depending on the importance and advantages of the finished product of your project, you can choose the severity or how much of the daily distractions you want to take away. People at times delete their social media just to avoid being distracted from the work that needs to be done. While some others are a bit more lax for example allotting only an hour or two in gaming each day. It really depends on you and how much your idea means to you.

6.Stay focused on the goal. A lot of people, like brilliant artists, have a lot of ideas or concepts that they think of right after starting one project. At times this would cause them to abandon the first one for another one or two. When that happens, nothing will ever get finished and those projects that should have been completed and came to fruition already.

What I can advise when that happens is just write down the next ideas for later then take a break from your project. It’s good to be hardworking but you also need to take care of yourself. Set a date with a loved one, have a fun day with your friends, do some self-care at home or go to a spa for a massage, do the things that you sincerely enjoy. That way, when you get back to your idea you will have the clarity, motivation, and drive to finally finish it.
