Minimalism and Mental Health

Several weeks ago, I was about to finish watching my favorite vlog on YouTube when I came across another vlog presented by a Japanese. I thought it was interesting because the topic is minimalism. So, I continued to watch and I finished watching it. Admittedly, it was my first time watching a video about minimalism and I thought it was quite interesting. The Japanese man was telling a story of how he lived in Tokyo with his apartment full of stuff that he bought every week. He was renting an apartment then.
I was quite mesmerized by how he told the story in a soft but inviting way. Truthful, and convincing. He continued with his story that he bought many things weekly and during paydays that before he knew it, he almost lost his space for sleeping because of unwanted stuff in his room. He also showed new books still unpacked and unread. He then realized that his life is in a mess that he suffered stress because of the overloading stuff in his home. Well, we know Japanese is simple and just a good size to move freely and meet their space needs. So, a small room that accommodates everything is just fine. In other words, buying so many things stressed him out.
So he decided to move to another city away from the hustle and bustle of city life in Tokyo. He transferred to another urban city which is more laid back and not stressful for him. He moved to another apartment where he showed his new room which is more spacious but simple/ He just arranged things that his everyday needs and disposed of other stuff that is not relevant to his life. From then on, he led a quiet, simple but happy life sans stress. He said most Japanese people now want to live simply unloading so much stuff that makes life confusing and stressful.
The Longman Dictionary defines minimalism as “a style of art, design, music, etc. that uses only a very few simple ideas or patterns” In Merriam-Webster dictionary, minimalism was given a definition, “a style or technique (as in music, literature, or design) that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity.” In other words, minimalism is a way or style of being simple in lifestyle. If you live as a minimalist, you are devoid of excessive or overindulgence in things that you can live without them. For example, because there is a sale going on, you will buy things that you do not need at this time.

Mental health is becoming a challenge today for public health officials because our world today is so dynamic yet sometimes chaotic. We live in fear, stress, and confusion because we live now in trying times. The coronavirus pandemic still lurks around us, our health is at stake, we are unstable financially, and natural calamities happen unexpectedly leaving us in difficult situations. These made us more stressful and some experienced depression and unhappiness.
With the rising cases of depression, mental health is affected; so, we need to do some changes in our life to maintain our clear minds and be mentally fit. We have to weed out things that we do not need or think about situations one at a time and not clutter our minds with trivial things. So that leading a simple life, being in some ways a minimalist (not intended to change your lifestyle) so that we can have a life that is comfortable and stress-free.

Research on mental health confirms that minimalism and personal health are related to each other. Stressful living adversely affects our mind and sometimes when we are stressed out, we cannot think clearly, we come up with poor judgment and decisions that consequently lead to depression.
