The latter decided to not make marriages official because, in his view, single men are far better soldiers than married men. Valentine did not agree with this and married couples secretly. He was sentenced to death by Claudius II when he found out. There was another Valentine, Saint Valentine of Terni, who is also associated with the holiday that we know now. According to History.com, he was also beheaded by the same emperor. There is also an urban legend about another Valentine who was imprisoned and sent the very first Valentine greeting to his lover, a young girl who was said to be the daughter of a jailor.
