With the current events taking place around the world like the pandemic, a lot of students have been forced to stay at home and take online classes. Also, school violence and incidents of severe bullying have been at an all-time high, so a lot of parents have started opting for homeschooling.
That leaves parents a lot of opportunities to help their children cope in a healthy manner and share their best practices while they are at school. It will be an added responsibility for busy parents but it’s a great way to check the children’s study habits, where they are in their lessons and how they cope with the stress and workload in school. That would be a chance for parents to bond with their children and also guide them to healthier sets of habits.
One of my favorite techniques not just for studying but any other task is the Pomodoro Technique that was founded by an Italian named Francisco Cirillo primarily as a time management method. This is best for people who are easily distracted. It is a great way to manage time but also a great way to study more effectively. These are the steps for the Pomodoro technique:
1. First thing you need to do is to pick one subject to study.
2. The next one is to create a timer for 25-30 minutes and use the time to study the subject.
3. When the timer is up, you need to take a two to five-minute break to relax your brain.
4. The next thing you have to do is repeat the process again.
5. After four repetitions, you may take a longer break around 15-30 minutes.
6. Each study session is a completed task so tick or write an X in your notebook or to-do list. Then, move on to the next subject.
The next effective study technique is the Feynman Method. It is based on the concept that “If you want to understand something, you need to be able to explain it in simple terms. That said, the steps to this method are also rather simplistic.
1. First you need to take a piece of paper and choose the topic or subject.
2. Then, you need to explain and expand on the topic like you are teaching the concept to a student.
3. After that, you need to reexamine what you wrote, check your reading materials, and check for the mistakes made.
4. Lastly, if you have used technical terms or complex words that would not be easily understood, you need to rewrite these in layman’s terms.
The next study technique is best for those who are visual learners because it’s used with flashcards. It’s called the Leitner System. A German science journalist named Sebastian Leitner in the 1970s created it. The concept of the Leitner is having a few boxes and flashcards for study.
You need to create flashcards by writing the concept on one side and the definition on one side. Then you would quiz yourself if you got the answer correct it would go to box #2, if not it goes to box #1. You could create three boxes: box #1 for topic flashcards to be quizzed every day until you get it right, box #2 for the flashcards that were answered properly and will be quizzed on days that you choose for example Tuesday and Thursday, box #3 for the flashcards quizzed on box #2 and was answered correctly. The ones answered incorrectly will go to box #1 and will be quizzed every day.
The next study technique is the SQ3R strategy. This strategy is primarily a reading comprehension to help learners retain information. The name of the strategy is the acronym for the steps this entails: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. These are the ones mainly used in schools
1.Survey- Scan the subject that is needed and only takes notes of the headings, subheadings, images, or other standout features like charts. Read between the lines, noting the subject, verb, and object of important sentences.
2.Question- Formulate questions regarding the topic. Here you can also use the Feynman Method. Ask yourself what the topic is about and what you know about it so far.
3.Read- The learner needs to read the chapter again. This time not only to scan the chapter but read it carefully and see what was missed.
4.Recite- The Feynman method is also applicable here, where you need to summarize in your own words everything that was read. Recall and identify important information points then answer the questions from the second step more accurately.
5.Review- After finishing the chapter that was studied, now it’s time to review the topic for clarity and full comprehension. If you need to reread some parts or quiz yourself again, you can do so in this step.
There are a lot of study techniques for anybody from children to adults trying to learn something or going back to university to augment monthly cash flow. You can choose which one is best for you and conducive to your learning style. These are just a few of those. Along with proper nutrition, hydration, exercise, sleep, and environment you can be at your optimal best to learn anything you have set your mind to.
For an optimal environment to learn in, you should make sure that there is not a lot of clutter, mess, or trash in the room that you will study. Keep liquids or snacks within your reach for your breaks. You can create the kind of environment you best thrive in.
Some thrive in a quiet environment, some like some noise or music in the background like chilling lofi music while some could study even with a film playing. Next, you would have to check your posture. It would also be best if you have a chair or desk that would be good for studying. For children or teens, there are products at Flexispot that would be good for them.
One of them is the Height Adjustable Ergonomic Study Desk that is ideal for kids and teenagers.
