Gone but Never Forgotten: Frank Caprio, the World’s Nicest Judge

21 August 2025

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Judge Frank Caprio, truly “the world’s nicest judge,” who died peacefully at the age of 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. His empathy turned a judge’s bench into a place of healing and humanity. As he once wisely reflected, “Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with their ears, and feeling with their heart.”

We were privileged to share a moment of collaboration with him on YouTube. Though he has passed away, his spirit continues to live on in our hearts and in the countless lives he touched.

Frank Caprio’s Life and Contributions

1. A Lifetime of Service

Judge Frank Caprio (1936–2025) served as Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court from 1985 until his retirement in 2023. His long career reflected a deep commitment to fairness, dignity, and public service.

2. Justice with Compassion

Through the program "Caught in Providence,” Judge Caprio became known as “the world’s nicest judge.” He listened with empathy, often showing mercy to those facing hardship, proving that true justice must also include humanity.

  • Showing Kindness to a Senior Citizen: An elderly man received a speeding ticket after rushing his seriously ill son to the doctor. Upon hearing the full story, Judge Caprio dismissed the ticket and said to the man, “You're a good man. You're doing what every good parent would do.”
  • Supporting a Young Family: A mother appeared in court with her young daughter for a parking violation. The child was visibly nervous, and Judge Caprio, demonstrating his trademark empathy, invited the child to “decide” the amount of the fine. The child chose a $50 fine, but ultimately, Judge Caprio decided to waive the fine, providing that the child’s mother bought her breakfast. This moment, widely shared from the show Caught in Providence, exemplifies Judge Caprio’s philosophy of blending justice with humanity.
  • Relieving a Struggling Veteran: A war veteran who was struggling financially arrived in court for a parking violation. Judge Caprio, showing understanding and empathy, waived the fine and gently remarked, “You’ve already given so much to this country, and I won’t let this fine be one more burden for you to carry.”

These moments, among countless others, demonstrate how he turned a courtroom into a place of empathy and human connection.

3. A Global Legacy

Clips of his rulings have spread worldwide and are viewed millions of times online. His ability to balance accountability with forgiveness has inspired people across cultures, making him a global symbol of kindness in law.

4. Advocacy for Education and Community

Beyond the courtroom, Judge Caprio created scholarships and supported countless community programs, helping young people pursue education and build brighter futures.

5. A Beacon of Kindness

Even while facing illness, he remained a source of courage and hope. His words, “Kindness is like a boomerang; it always finds its way back to you,” remind us that his spirit endures far beyond his time with us.

Although Judge Frank Caprio is no longer with us, his spirit of kindness, compassion, and humanity will live on. His legacy continues to inspire us to approach the world—and each other—with understanding and empathy, reminding us that one person’s warmth can touch countless lives.
