How to Survive Crunch Time and Make Sure it Doesn't Happen Again

23 January 2023

Let's say you're in a situation where you're stuck.

There's a deadline haunting you and you have a flight in three hours. You have to leave for the airport, prepare your luggage (which you haven't done yet), take a quick shower, maybe have a bite of a meal, and make sure you don't forget anything, especially your passport.

This is an important trip that you can't miss because you already paid for the flight ticket, your accommodations, activities, etc. You can't even find a different schedule because you are loaded with work on other dates. There's really no option to cancel it.

And then, with regard to the deadline you need to meet, it's also a do-or-die situation. There's no other choice but for you to submit it or else you should already start considering other options on how you'll go about in the future.

So what do you do during crunch time? We've all been here one too many times so the situation is not at all foreign to us. Based on experience, here are some tips to get out of this situation with flying colors.

Our first tip is to phone a friend. You need a little help from your friends, darling because you are not superhuman. Unless there are only a few little things left to do in the task that you need to finish, then you would need help. Maybe you can ask your mom or sibling to help you with your luggage. In five minutes or less, write what you generally need and let them prepare it for you. You are not in the position to still choose what you want to wear. If you don't have a car, you can ask a friend, partner, or someone in the house again to drop you off at the airport. This will save time instead of booking an Uber or of course, commuting.

You can also ask for help with the specific task you are doing. For example, if it's for work, you can communicate with your boss or team about your current situation. You can work out a solution together such as delegating the other tasks to other team members or extending the deadline for you. Just make sure that you give a convincing case on why they should do you a favor this time.

The next tip is to get up, turn off your notifications, and put your 100% attention on the task that you are doing. You need your mind to compartmentalize. Yes, there are other things to worry about but right now, what you need to do is to finish your task so your mind should only be focusing on that and not floating elsewhere. Distractions should no way be welcomed at this ungodly hour.

The third tip is to sacrifice something in the list, the most inconsequential. Maybe for now, you can skip taking a shower and just mind about it when you reach your destination. You can also skip breakfast and just eat something along the way. There are just some things to sacrifice when you don't have the time.

The fourth tip is to strategize the best course of action. If your task is something that can be done on your laptop with an internet connection, then prioritize getting to the airport first, checking in, and then you can sit down and finish your work (thank God for remote work opportunities!). Whatever your situation is, step out of it for a minute and strategize how you can make things happen if not for the best, at least for the better.

Fifth, and this is more of a preventive measure, invest in ergonomic pieces. When you invest in ergonomic tools, you become more efficient and productive. You won't always find yourself stuck in situations like this and more importantly, you finish your work in its best form.

Here are some tools from FlexiSpot that you can check out:
