31 July 2020

When it comes to taking care of your desktop, different types of materials mean different cleaning methods and maintenance tips are required. Keeping your desktop clean and sturdy is an important aspect of ensuring that your desk lasts a long time.  Whatever desktop type you have, we’re sure that you’ll discover the needed tips to keep your standing desk at tip top shape. In this article, we’ll be exploring different methods to help ensure that your adjustable desk stays sturdy and efficient. We’ll be providing tips to the top 4 most common desktop types for  height adjustable desks:  laminated tabletops, bamboo finishes, wood and glass desktops.

Laminated Tabletops

As the most common desktop type for most adjustable standing desks, very few people know how to maintain and clean this type of desktop. The best way to maintain your laminate furniture is by ensuring that you ensure that it doesn’t fade. Unlike more porous material, laminate furniture doesn’t deteriorate easily but is susceptible to fading if not cared for properly. First ensure that your desk isn’t in contact with direct sunlight and water, this will lower the risk of fading. This means ensuring that you have a coaster when placing hot or cold drinks and ensuring that your desk isn’t located too near a window. When it comes to cleanup, avoid the traditional soap and water method. Use a microfiber cloth and a little warm water for quick cleanups. Should you need the use of soap for more intense messes, opt for a mix of mild soap and water. Always ensure that your desk is dry after cleaning to avoid possible damage.

Bamboo Desktops

Bamboo desktops and furniture is often considered a rare yet desirable type of material. Due to it’s sturdy build and aesthetically pleasing look, it comes to no surprise why many people love all sorts of furniture made of bamboo. It’s overall maintenance remains a mystery to most people however. For general maintenance, rub linseed oil using a dry piece of cloth to improve the finish of your desktop. Do this only once every two months to help maintain the integrity of the bamboo. Another important maintenance tip to take note of is to limit its exposure to water and too much moisture, this can help your bamboo furniture last a long time. When cleaning simple and small messes, use a dry cloth to gently wipe down dust or other forms of dirt.  For cleaning big messes, be sure to use mild soap diluted in water and use a soft cloth to gently clean off dirt and messes. Avoid heavy-duty cleaners as it could cause damage to your bamboo desktop in the longrun.

Wooden Desktops

Wooden desktops are one of the more aesthetically pleasing desktops in the market. While it looks good, very few people actually know how to maintain and clean their wooden desktops. Majority of users often use wood polishers as a cleaner, since it makes their desks shiny. While it’s a great way to keep your desktop looking good, too much use of it can actually cause it to fade and deteriorate over time. Similar to laminate surfaces, small messes are best cleaned up with a microfiber cloth. For bigger messes avoid detergent soaps and opt for less toxic soap flakes. Dissolve it in water and clean your wooden desktop with a microfiber cloth. For sticky messes, dilute some white vinegar into some water to remove the stickiness and finish it off with the soap mix to avoid the smell from sticking.

Glass Desktops

While cleaning a glass desktop might seem straightforward enough, you might experience issues with cloudiness and removing stains. When it comes to a quick cleanup, a microfiber cloth and warm water is enough to do the trick! When it comes to cloudiness, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly with a piece of cloth. Afterwards, apply some glass cleaner, repeat the process until the cloudiness disappears. For stains from coffee, tea or other liquids that may have stuck, apply glass cleaner to the stain and let it sit for a minute and a half. Once it’s settled, use a microfiber cloth to wipe it off. Be sure to rub it in a circular motion to make it more effective. Repeat this until the stain is gone.
